The Underworld has been used as a metaphor for human life and death in many cultures and eras. In religious contexts, it is referred to as hell—a place of punishment—and indeed, many people still believe that if they commit sins, they cannot go to heaven. Even in modern times, it is very difficult to distinguish between good and evil. Yet the underworld is ultimately still a place where someone "lives," and the system that operates there ultimately reflects human life itself: desires, habits, attitudes, society, the process of punishment, the participants in the system of punishment, and the diverse fantasies of people.
